Zululand OBSERVER

	Zululand Surfski Club IN contrast to the previous week's flat and balmy conditions, last week's race was held in 20km/h NE wind conditions with sufficient chop to challenge the newcomers and those who were more 'vertically challenged'. The course was also very different, with paddlers having to venture well out to sea and then make the most of what choppy runs there were available on their return. The race again saw a strong Zululand contingent with some seven development paddlers tackling the short course and 13 the long course. On the doubles front, Stretch and Colleen Struwig managed to pip the Kennedy and Stavast duo (convincingly they would say), but time will tell how the series pans out. On the singles side, the juniors Sahun Austin and Donovan Kennedy came in second and third respectively, Mike Stevens was third veteran and Nigel Stevens was the first master. The next race is the McCarthy Toyota King of the Bay race, which starts in Durban harbour and progresses out of the mouth. Rhino poachers nabbed

	Rhino poachers nabbed Lesley Stephenson SIX persons alleged to be involved in the poaching and selling of a white rhino from the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve have been arrested. In a combined operation between the Organised Crime Unit (OCU) and Mtuba SAPS, Mandla Peter Manqele (32) from Ulundi, Zemizi Sihle Manqele (24) from Ulundi, Bafana Professor Gumede (34) from Mfekaye, Dumisani Bongani Gumede (50) from Matubatuba and Mashonisha Abram Mothlabane (66) from Krugersdorp were arrested following a tip-off. Evidence recovered OCU Investigating Officer, Insp Sitha Makhanya, with assistance from from Mtuba SAPS Inspector S E Nxumalo and student constables Mkhwanazi, Buthelezi and Mdletshe, recovered cash, possibly proceeds from the selling of the rhino horn and the R1 rifle which has been linked to the poaching incident. Street value Head of OCU, Supt Mthembu, confirmed the street value of the poached horn at R1-million, while the value of the rhino is R500 000. 'Poached horn is used for jewellery, ornaments or trophies, as well as for muti purposes,' said Mbatha. He added that the arrests followed a highly successful month for the Organised Crime Unit, who have also enjoyed some good convictions and arrests for armed robbery and hijacking cases.

	Life sentences for policeman killers Sisters of the deceased, Nobulelo Mkhize, Busi Manqele and Ntombikhona Magwaza Investigating officer Insp Jafta Buthelezi (middle, back) escorts Sihle Ngema and Sifiso Mthembu to the police vehicle which will take them to prison Dalena van Jaarsveld EXACTLY a year after pulling over a police vehicle and stabbing a policeman to death, the two men accused of the murder of Capt Emmanuel Nhlengi Manqele were found guilty of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Mtubatuba High Court on Thursday. Court evidence revealed that Sifiso Mthembu (23) and Sihle Ngema(20) instructed Ngema's girlfriend at the time to pull over a car on the N2 as they wanted to go to town and needed a lift. She didn't know that this plan involved hijacking the vehicle. When Capt Manqele stopped to offer them a lift, a struggle ensued during which the policeman was stabbed. He died at the scene. When they couldn't start the car, they fled the scene on foot. Apart from the life sentences, Ngema and Mthembu were also sentenced to 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and another five years for the possession of ammunition and an unlicensed firearm. Ngema will serve another three years for escaping from police custody when the police arrested the men shortly after the killing in May last year. Judge Kruger denied both of the accused's applications for leave to appeal.

	LUCKY ESCAPE Piet van der Walt reflects that he is lucky to be alive after being mauled by a leopard on Thursday evening. His skin was ripped off from forehead to neck, and his arm was hurt in the fall Paul Jennings, husband of the Mpila camp manager, heard the scream and ran to assist. He was able to scare off the leopard Dave Savides WATCHED by his nine year-old grand-daughter, a Richards Bay man survived being clawed to the ground in a leopard attack on Thursday evening. Piet van der Walt, a retired master builder and a long-time Richards Bay Rotary Club member, was counting his blessings after having escaped with relatively minor injuries from what could have been a fatal attack. From his hospital bed, he told the Zululand Observer the story of his dramatic brush with death at Mpila camp in Hluhluwe game park. 'My children had flown out from the UK and Australia for a family wedding and the group of us, 10 adults and four children, spent two nights at Mpila. 'On the second night they were all in their tents and I was making a potjie as the sun went down,' said Van der Walt, fondly known as 'Piet Pompies' to his many friends. 'I was on a chair with my back facing towards the bush to shield the fire from the wind. 'As I watched my grand-daughter Jessica approach to about three metres from me, I was suddenly pulled backwards from the chair as the leopard clawed my forehead. We had seen hyena earlier and my first thought as I was pulled down was that this was a hyena attack. 'I screamed and with blood running all over me I ran towards the tents.' Frantic race Fortunately Jessica had run away first and was able to describe the animal 'with spots and a long tail'. Piet's scream of shock as a huge flap of skin was ripped loose from his forehead to the back of his neck roused family members and staff at the camp to begin a frantic race to stabilise him and rush him to the Bay Hospital. Piet's daughter Christie, a staff nurse, stemmed the massive flow of blood and packed his head with towels. Her husband, well known Zululand hockey personality Mark Shirley, drove Piet to the Bay Hospital. 'Ironically, we had gone to the park hoping to see lions, and as we exited through the gate, there was a young lion in the road,' said Piet. Along the way a call was made to his golfing partner, Dr Frank van Niekerk, who awaited their arrival at hospital. Piet was taken to surgery for treatment and cleaning of the gaping wound. 'The doctor told me he stopped counting stitches after 100. 'My big fear after the attack was that I would die from loss of blood,' said Piet, who added that he had not felt pain at any stage and was surprised at how calm he was throughout the incident. While the risk of infection was a concern, he was also receiving treatment in case of rabies. Shone in eyes The story was also taken up by Paul Jennings, husband of the Mpila camp manager, who visited Piet in hospital on Friday. 'I heard his scream and ran out. 'While everyone was attending to Piet's injuries I walked around with a torch and a gun. 'Not 15 metres from the scene the beam shone onto the leopard's face,' said Paul. 'It sank down and crouched, ready to spring on me; I kept the torch shining on his face and fired warning shots and it ran off.' Environmentalists believe the leopard's uncharacteristic behaviour indicated that it may have been suffering an injury and was looking for easy prey. This is the first such incident recorded at the camp. Piet, meanwhile, realises how close the call was. 'Just the night before I stood at the same spot and said a prayer in Zulu, thanking God that my family was here together in this beautiful place in Africa. 'He has reminded me to appreciate life even more.' Still retaining his sense of humour, he added: 'At least Jessica will go back to Australia with the most amazing story to tell - of how her Oupa survived a leopard attack in darkest Africa!'

 Time Zones

South African local time (Bravo or GMT+2), not to be confused with Zulu time, is 2 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), also Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Zulu time (Z) and operates all year throughout the entire country.

Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia are in the same time zone although Namibia changes in winter to UTC+1 from 2am on the 1st Sunday of April until 2am on the 1st Sunday of September.

Rapid breakthrough in rhino poaching case

 RAPID BREAKTHOUGH IN RHINO POACHING CASE

 

For immediate release
The SAPS in the Mtubatuba area, assisted by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife staff,  have arrested six people following the shooting of a white rhino bull on the western shore of LakeSt Lucia to the south of Charter's Creek in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on 6 May 2008.
The carcase of the rhino was found in open grassland adjacent to a thick patch of forest by a contractor involved in removing alien vegetation.
The scene of the incident was thoroughly examined by  SAPS and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife  investigators who found several cartridge cases and also recovered several spent bullet heads from the carcase.
These items have been sent to the SAPS for forensic testing.
The accused appeared in the Mtubatuba Magistrate's Court on Monday 19 May 2008 and the case has been remanded to 26 May 2008 for bail applications.
In the course of making the arrests, the SAPS officers recovered an R1 rifle and several rounds of live ammunition, which have also been sent in for forensic testing.
Close co-operation between the SAPS, iSimangaliso Wetland Park staff and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife investigators continues in the meanwhile.

	Auction nets over R12-million A young group of Nyala were all ears The Kelly family - Garry, Kate, Jasmin and Jade from Warmbaths - stroll around the bomas prior to the auction on Saturday Larry Bentley Buyers from far and wide converged on the Sibaya Casino near Durban to buy game at this year's Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Game Auction. Both buyers and sellers were satisfied with the response and excellent prices were paid for most species on offer. All 227 lots were sold and the coffers of EKZNW received a healthy boost of more than R12-million. The highest price paid for a single White Rhino was R470 000 and a female and calf combination fetched R530 000. The average White Rhino price was R252 973. Other interesting prices were dassies fetching a maximum of R450 and hippo R18 250 each. Management tool EKZNW CEO Khulani Mkhize was extremely pleased with the outcome of the auction and said that the excellent result clearly demonstrated the faith the buyers had in the quality of EKZNW game and the professional manner in which it is captured and handled by their Game Capture Unit. He said this unit must rate as one of the best of its kind in the world. The KZN Nature Conservation Board Chairman, Dr Patrick Sokhela, said that it is important that it be known that the game auction is primarily a game management tool in which excess game is sold after internal transfers of animals have been made. The financial spin-off is a bonus and what is earned from the game sales contributes significantly to the EKZNW success as a nature conservation agency.
